TWO NEW ENDEMIC PINGUICULAS IN THE APUAN ALPS

In an article by the scientific journal Wulfenia two new endemic species belonging to the genus Pinguicula apuane L. have been recently described, by Maria Ansaldi and S. Jost Casper; these are Pinguicula mariae Casper nova spec. and Pinguicula apuana Casper Ansaldi et nova spec. The butterworts species are characterized by sticky and glandular leaves that the plant uses to attract, capture, kill, and "digest" the insects, in order to compensate for the lack of mineral nutrients in their habitat.

The new plants live in rocky and wet sites, close up of drippings, often in stations facing north.

So, the flora of the Apuan Alps has been enriched by two new entities, in addition to many of the same exclusive territory, demonstrating that relief reaches here the evolutionary phenomenon of speciation. Here are some photos of the two entities vegetable with brief notes on the main features

Pinguicula mariae Casper nova spec.

- 2n=32

- wide opening of the corolla (with an angle of approximately 180 ° between the upper and lower lobes), and a stain distinctly white, drop-shaped, the proximal part of the middle lobe and lower in the throat.

- Altitudinal range between 250 and 1000 m asl

Pinguicula apuana Casper et Ansaldi nova spec.

- 2n=64

- white spot on the middle lobe lower in the most central location, sometimes divided longitudinally into two parts by the presence of purple striae, which also mark the throat

- Altitudinal range between 250 and 1950 m asl
