Giants' pot-holes of Mt. Sumbra
geology

Chert "waves" in the red-violet and greenish calcschists

Walking up to the Mt. Fiocca along the Fatonero stream, you can discover in a rock succession – from the oldest to the youngest ones – marbles (m), cherty limestones (cs), cherts (d), metalimestones with cherty bands and nodules (cse), calcschists and sericitic phyllites (sc) and the quartz-feldspatic metasandstones (pmg).

Due to the folding structure you can cross this same succession more than once.

On the geological map below, you can read the rocks distribution in this area (see the labels in brackets in the map) as well as it also underlines the presence of three tiny klippen of “Cavernoso” limestone (cv).

However, the Mt. Sumbra however, consists mainly of marbles (m) and cherty limestones (cs).

Useful information on the age of this rock succession can be achieved by the presence of fossil ammonites from the Lower Jurassic (Sinemurian-Toarcian) in the cherty limestones of Mt. Fiocca (Fatonero locality).
