 PHOTO CHRONICLE

Monday 23.09.2019

The Coordination Committee Meeting takes place in Cazalla de la Sierra, inside Sierra Norte de Sivilla UGGp, in a mountainous area of Andalusia.

Monday 23.09.2019

Around Cazalla de la Sierra, the main rock is Diorite belonging to the core of a great anticline. It is composed essentially of sodium plagioclase and hornblende, biotite, pyroxene and epidote.

Monday 23.09.2019

The landscape around Cazalla de la Sierra is characterized by large dry pastures, with olive groves and scattered woods of evergreen mediterranean oaks, especially Quercus rotundifolia.

Monday 23.09.2019

In this area there are also ancient trees of cork oak (Quercus suber).

Monday 23.09.2019

Near Cazalla de la Sierra, the Capas de Campoallá is a Stratigraphic Unit with a regular sequence of slates, limestones and sandstones showing evident phenomena of differential erosion at various scale.

Tuesday 24.09.2019

The EGN Coordination Committee Meeting is hosted in an ancient distillery at Cazalla de la Sierra. This factory was founded in 1830 and destined to the production of anise and cherries cream.

Tuesday 24.09.2019

The delegates of the European UGGp take place in the long corridor of the distillery, supported by acute horseshoe arches.

The bright and orderly inner courtyard of the Miura distillery during a short break of the Meeting.

Tuesday 24.09.2019

Alessia Amorfini - catalyst of the "Geohazards" working group - explains the proposals and results of the discussion within this special commission.

Wednesday 25.09.2019

The Conference take places in Seville, Isla de la Cartuja, in a 1992 Expo stand, built by Morocco and known as "Hassan 2nd Pavilion". This Arab-style building is currently home to "Three Mediterranean Cultures" Fundation.

Wednesday 25.09.2019

A very suggestive image dominates the entrance to the Conference. It is the face of a young woman in background of an old geological map of Europe. The image represents the Geoparks: "memory of Earth, future for People"...

Wednesday 25.09.2019

The opening ceremony starts with the welcome address of Babbis Fassolulas (EGN Vice-President), Kristof Vanderberghe (Segretary of the UNESCO-IGGP) and Carmen Crespo Díaz (Minister of Agricolture, Livestock and Sustainable Development, Junta de Andalucía).

Wednesday 25.09.2019

Thematic session "Aspiring Geoparks": the  chairmen are Alessia Amorfini (in the center) and Barnabás Korbely (on the right).

Wednesday 25.09.2019

Communication by Aniello Aloia (Italian Geoparks Coordinator) about "New Geo-environmental educational tools of Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National park UGGp".

Wednesday 25.09.2019

A little space of celebrity for the wine of the Apuan Alps UGGp. The labels "Enjology" and "Transalpe" appear in a slide of Marine Bettant du Breuil, within her communication "Wine in Geoparks: how to introduce geology from a bottle of wine?".

Thursday 26.09.2019

Field trip n. 2 leads the Conference participants to the Almaden area, where a granite pluton, known as "Granite of Berrocal", outcrops south-east.

Thursday 26.09.2019

The field trip is led by some professors from Seville University.

Thursday 26.09.2019

The first stop is in El Chorro locality. Here, you can see a narrow and deep gorge, with waterfalls during the autumn, winter and spring. A large boulder is stuck between two granite walls, which delimited a basaltic dike, more easily eroded by the swirling waters of the stream.

Thursday 26.09.2019

The second stop is in the rocky riverbed of La Calzadilla stream.

Thursday 26.09.2019

Here the rocky substrate shows different contacts between the granite (light colour) and the tonalite (dark colour), during their magma cooling. The jagged or sharp separation surface indicate respectively a different or a similar magmatic viscosity.

Thursday 26.09.2019

Still an image of the rocky riverbed, with circular cavities produced by the water swirling movement.

Thursday 26.09.2019

A rare "Giant's pothole" or "Giant's kettle", formed in the granite bedrock.

Thursday 26.09.2019

The typical landscape in El Berrocal area. The granite meteorization has given rise to a rugged surface, with accumulation of corestone boulders, flagstones, rocking stones and sandy areas.

Thursday 26.09.2019

El Berrocal area is dominated by a huge granite boulder - a "stone knight" - in precarious balance...

Thursday 26.09.2019

Further stop in "Cortijo El Berrocal" Visitor Centre keeping an example of fossilized tree trunks - probably Araucaria - a coniferous specie lived in Upper Carboniferous-Lower Permian (303-290 million years ago).

Friday 27.09.2019

The closing ceremony returns in the main room of the "Hassan 2nd Pavilion". The Conference ends with the speeches by Kristin Rangnes (EGN Coordinator) and Francisco José Gutiérrez Rodríguez (General Secretary of Environment, Water and Climate Change, Junta de Andalucía).

Friday 27.09.2019

Ilaria Selvaggio (Wildlife Guide) presents the next Conference in Sesia-Val Grande UGGp, from 22nd to 24th September 2021.

Friday 27.09.2019

The final show, with music and acting, represents an educational project in progress of schools and local people. The title of this short piece is "The Warrior Maid". The main actress is "Geopaca", the mascot from Villuercas Ibores Jara UGGp.

Saturday 28.09.2019

The last day offers the opportunity for an unusual field trip in search of fossils in the main monuments of Seville. In the photo, an ammonite in the Jurassic limestone of the Plaza de España balustrade.

Saturday 28.09.2019

A fragment of bivalve mollusc - probably a Pectinidae - in the wall stone of Torre de l'Oro. This fossil lived during the Neogene.

Saturday 28.09.2019

Neogene oysters in the door column of the Archivio General de Indias.
